The Bayview Yacht Club celebrated the start of their summer offshore season with their popular Bayview One-Design Regatta, with sailing taking place on Lake St. Claire. Unlike last year when the pandemic restrictions in Canada forced all sailing to take place along the Michigan shoreline, this year the BYC Race Committees and PROs laid out three racing circles (“A” on the Michigan side and “B” and “C” on the Canadian side). The weather conditions were significantly more variable than what was forecasted each day. On Friday, the forecasted moderate westerlies didn’t materialize until late in the day. It started light to moderate from the south, varying from 140 to 190 degrees over the course of the day before swinging SW at 10-14 kts. Nevertheless, it was champagne sailing for three races in sunny to partly cloudy skies and 60s temps. Saturday’s weather started light with partly sunny skies and chilly in the low 60s. After a postponement, the wind finally settled to allow two more races in an uncharacteristic seabreeze that was primarily in the ENE quadrants for light to moderate 4 to 6 kts breeze. Sunday dawned cool and overcast again with a chance of rain and a dubious wind forecast at best. After a long postponement that lasted into early afternoon, a light ENE seabreeze filled in to allow just one more race to be completed. The J/111s were dominated by a Cleveland, OH-based team. Winning their first race convincingly and never looking back was Jeff Davis’s SHAMROCK, posting a scoreline of five bullets and a deuce to finish the regatta with a mere 7 points total. Behind them, it was a battle between two boats for the balance of the podium: Seth & Kevin Young’s BLACK SEAL and Brad Kimmel & Steve Young’s DIABLO. In the end, by winning the final race, DIABLO took the silver with 16 points total, just one point ahead of BLACK SEAL.
