Over 50 J/Boats participated in the 2023 edition of Key Yachting’s J/Cup UK, hosted by the Royal Southern Yacht Club. The 24th edition provided exciting racing and plenty of fun ashore. The J/Cup featured one-design racing for three classes and IRC Racing Classes for mixed fleets. The three-day regatta featured both windward-leeward and round-the-cans racing. Day 1: The regatta kicked off with almost 300 sailors enjoying sunny conditions in the central Solent. With a slow start as racing began at lunchtime, the wind picked up toward the end of the afternoon. The J/111s had very close results on both races of the day. Reigning J/111 UK National Champion Tony Mack’s McFLY had a strong start, placing first overall by the end of the day. Paul Griffith’s JAGERBOMB placed second after a very successful second race. Dirk Van Beeks’ SABRIEL followed in third by the end of the second race, with Chris Jones and Louise Makin’s JOURNEYMAKER II close behind. DAY 2: It was another nice day on the capricious Solent Water. Good sailing, nice courses and great racing all around for both circles and all of the fleets. Tony Mack’s McFLY continued a very successful national championship. At the end of day two, McFLY was still at the top of the leaderboard, even after placing third across the day’s racing. Jones and Makin’s JOURNEYMAKER II followed closely behind in second. Cornel Riklin’s JITTERBUG managed to push its way to the top across the three races of day 2, leaving them in third overall. Day 3 Finale: The regatta finished on a high note, with lovely sailing conditions. Results were close for the J/111 National Championship. Despite the wind conditions, Tony Mack’s McFLY managed to retain the title after winning most of the races over the three days. Cornel Riklin’s crew on JITTERBUG pushed to second place, with Jones/Makin’s JOURNEYMAKER II in third. For more J/Cup UK information, visit https://www.j-cup.co.uk/.
